It began at an assistive technology conference — Dr. Rupal Patel walked into an exhibit hall and witnessed a little girl and a grown man having a conversation using their devices, different devices… but the same voice. She looked around and was astonished to see this happening all around her — literally hundreds of individuals using just a handful of the same generic voices. Voices that didn’t fit their bodies or their personalities.
We wouldn’t dream of fitting a little girl with the prosthetic limb of a grown man, why then was it okay to give her the same prosthetic voice as a grown man?
Dr. Patel was struck by this lack of individuality and knew she could create a solution that would give every individual a unique voice, regardless of their vocal ability. So, with some funding from the National Science Foundation, VocaliD was born.
From there, we set out to create custom crafted voices that captured unique vocal identities and give people the ability to sound like themselves. Individuals living with speechlessness are now being heard in their own unique VocaliD voice. Together, we can uplift others with the power of our collective voice. Founder & CEO
With decades of clinical and research experience in personalized assistive communication technology, Rupal champions the effort to bring VocaliD’s technology to the people who need it most. She is on leave from her tenured Professorship at Northeastern University to launch VocaliD.
A native of Canada, Rupal received her B.Sc. in Psychology from University of Calgary and her Masters and PhD in Speech Language Pathology from the University of Toronto. She then completed her post-doctoral studies in speech acoustics at MIT. An internationally renowned expert in speech motor control and assistive communication technology, she has raised over $6M in research funding and her work has been featured on TED, NPR, Wall Street Journal, Wired, etc.
VP, Research & Technology
An expert in speech signal processing with a passion for designing novel communication technologies, Geoff directs algorithm and custom voice creation efforts at VocaliD.
Geoff received his B.S. in engineering from Harvey Mudd College, his S.M. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from MIT and his Ph.D. in Speech and Hearing Biosciences and Technology also from MIT. With over 15 years of industry and research experience, Geoff has developed speech prostheses for alaryngeal speakers and has led several multi-million dollar DARPA efforts including the development of the first-ever mobile silent speech recognition system.
With over 15 years of experience across software development and management consulting, James has worked in a variety of roles that combine scientific application with platform scalability. He started his career working for two Academy Award winning post-production companies developing physical simulation and data scalability solutions. More recently James worked for McKinsey & Company building technology strategy for Global 500 companies and launched a funded startup in the hyper-distributed blockchain space.
James holds a Bachelors in Computer Science from Brown University and an MBA from the University of Toronto.
Michele is a purpose-driven storyteller and marketer who has used her creative analogical approach to give a strong branded voice to organizations for over 18-years. A strategically-minded marketer with multi-sector experience in Marketing, Strategy, and Business Development, she embraces the excitement and creative challenge of technology startups and the unique opportunities and challenges they deliver, particularly when involving nascent industries. Outside of the office, Michele is a global traveler and an accomplished professional photographer specializing in animal portraiture and street photography.
Well-rounded web application developer with 20 years web-development experience. Motivated by higher-level goals of making information accessible and explorable to users and driving down on the details to make that technically possible.
Stephen holds a B.A. in Development Studies and MBA in Finance from McGill University. He has over 20 years of experience in Web software development including 16 years of experience in Japan.
A rare blend of software developer and leading expert in parametric speech synthesis, Markus is advancing speech synthesis efforts at VocaliD.
Markus received his Ph.D. with distinction in speech synthesis from the Vienna University of Technology, and his M.Sc. and B.Sc. in Medical Informatics from the Vienna University of Technology and the Medical University of Vienna. He also holds the professional title “Engineer” from the Higher Technical Federal Education and Research Institut Wr. Neustadt, Austria. Markus has diverse software development experience ranging from energy and building management, to medical computer vision, 3D visualization and eGovernment.
Rixing, a recent graduate of the Computer Science program at Wentworth Institute of Technology, is one of those rare engineers with both a keen sense of user experience design and raw code hacking skills. While at VocaliD Rixing has led development of our revamped iOS app and in-house audio editing tools – and is critical wherever UX meets code.
Eric, a recent graduate of the Computer Science program at Wentworth Institute of Technology, has a background in robotics and AI. At VocaliD he’s led development of the VocaliD operations and data management systems as well as the 3rd party mobile and API integration layers. If it’s a critical backend system: Eric will make sure it works. He brings with him a trademark no-nonsense approach to both systems and user interface design and is known for building things that “just work”.
Data Analyst & Visualization
A self-taught data visualization whiz, Rachel turns words and data into print and digital art messages at VocaliD.
Rachel holds a Bachelor’s degree in Marine Science and Geography from Boston University and is currently pursuing a Master’s in Statistics at Harvard University. Her broad scientific and startup experience spans the fields of biogeochemistry, genomics, and geographic information systems and now speech technology, pointing to her unique talent in communicating through words, numbers and images.
